First Families Holds Banquet

First Families of Washington County, Ohio, held their annual banquet at noon on Saturday, May 16, 2015, at the Marietta Township Recreation Center in Reno.  The tables wee decorated in a patriotic theme.  President Sharon Gardner welcomed the group, and the invocation was given by Lila Hill.

Following the luncheon buffet, Ernie Thode introduced the speaker, Scott A. Britton, Executive Director at The Castle.  The title of his talk was "Early Ladies of Washington County."  He spoke about five women who played important roles in the earl history of the area.  Mary Gardner Owen and Mary Bird Lake were nurses who helped to prevent the smallpox epidemic of 1790 from devastating the early settlers.  Sarah Cutler Dawes and Frances Dana Barker Gage wee both involved with the women's rights movement and anti-slavery efforts at the time of the Civil War.

Three candidates were presented certificates by Shirley Harmon and inducted into First Families of Washington County, Ohio.  Each of these candidates had proved they descended from individuals who resided in Washington County before 1830.

The new members are Ann Marlene Dyar of Marietta, Ohio, and Judith Lee Urich of Valley Village, California, whose ancestors were Benjamin Ridgway, Elzy Ridgway, John Marshall Ridgway, Thomas B. Kirkpatrick, and Nancy B. Kirkpatrick; and Judy Bacon Koonce of Spring Hill, Kansas, whose ancestors were William Fraser, James Fraser, and Joseph Fulcher.

The next First Families banquet will be held on Saturday, May 21, 2016.  People interested in joining First Families of Washington County, Ohio, should write to: Washington County Chapter, OGS, PO Box 2174, Marietta, OH 45750, to receive additional information.
