Jesse was Washington County, Ohio Sheriff from Jan. 1850 to 1853.
According to the American Civil War Soldiers Database, he enlisted on Oct.1, 1861 as a Colonel at the age of 60. He was commissioned in Company S of the 77th OVI on Jan. 25, 1862.
He died of disease on Apr. 18,, 1863 at Alton, Illinois. Jesse was in command of the Alton Prison from Sept. 5, 1862 until his death. Some Alton Prison websites state that Jesse took sick and returned to his home in Ohio before he died. This is not true. He died at Alton Prison while he was Commander of the prison. When he died, Major William Bion Mason, (grandson of William Bond Mason, 1st 48 settlers of Marietta) was promoted to Colonel. William remained in command of the Alton Prison until July 30, 1863 when he was relived by Colonel George Kinkade of the 37th Iowa Volunteers.

He was shot by his former overseer on a plantation in New Madrid, MO when he traveled from his new home at Marietta, OH back to New Madrid, MO to bring his mother-in-law to live in Marietta. Instead, she escorted his dead body back to Marietta for burial in the Mound Cemetery.
He was freed from slavery when the Union army went through New Madrid. He was still dressed in his uniform/Union overcoat when he was killed by a Confederate sympathizer, his former overseer. Listed in Marietta Times on 15 Mar 1866 as Shot by Newton Hammond & buried in Mound Cemetery on 3 Mar 1866.; 2/12/66; ; GILES; ; ; ; ; ; Abt. 1832

Left thumb shot off. Don't know if this is the same as L. R. Merabin or not.
